Toward the De-Subjugation of Racially Marked Knowledges in Communication

Abstract

In this article, I offer some of my reflections on the concept of race in communication research. It is divided into three sections: (a) Racially Marked and Unmarked Knowledges in Communication, (b) Thick Intersectionalities, and (c) Without Guarantees: Some Reflective Practices.

Notes

This phrase emerged from my ongoing discussions of transformative pedagogy with Professors Wenshu Lee and John Elia.

This label was originally coined by Professor Wenshu Lee.

I am invoking Stuart Hall's (Citation1996) famous phrase to suggest that these practices do not determine a specific set of outcomes.
