The new theatre and the mysteries: Some provocative parallels

Abstract

Experiencing performances by important avant‐garde theatre groups indicates parallel characteristics of the “New Theatre.” Upon closer inspection these qualities seem similar to some traits of medieval religious drama. These parallels are explored through a conjectural reconstruction of key sequences of a mystery cycle in order to illuminate the old and new ritual theatres.
