Remarks on teaching grammar

Pages 279-284 | Published online: 01 Apr 2009

Abstract

Teaching grammar to children neither helps them talk better nor know more about the dynamics of the grammatical system. Nor does it “discipline minds.” It would be more productive to teach children how to speak appropriately in varied communication situations. Such an approach, which speech communication teachers are uniquely qualified to practice, can produce benefits in the sphere of communication abilities and for the educational system as a whole.
