Rhetorical function of ciceronian probability

Abstract

This paper investigates the philosophical provenance of Cicero's approach to rhetorical probability. Cicero fuses probability, a concept from Greek skeptic theory, and his rhetorical theory. Specifically, probability functions as the premise for an interlinking relationship existing between the orator, message, and audience. Therefore, the influence of probability upon Ciceronian rhetoric encompasses an inquiry into Cicero's requisites for the orator, the construction of the message, and the predisposition of the listeners.
