Cowboy Chautauqua: An account of its origins in central Texas, 1885–1890

Pages 282-296 | Published online: 01 Apr 2009

Abstract

The Chautauqua movement played a vital role in the history of oral interpretation; many isolated areas of the country were introduced to “elocution” through Chautauqua programs. This study traces the development of Chautauqua in central Texas, focusing particularly on the orators and elocutionists who were part of that development. The research is based extensively on historical record, mainly central Texas newspapers published from 1870–1890, and Chautauqua brochures of the period.
