Lobichnus variabalis Kemper 1968 has, until now, previously only been reliably documented from the Cretaceous of north Germany. Herein, the ichnotaxon is recorded and described from the early Devonian (Lochkovian) Chapman Sandstone of the Dockendorff Group of Maine, northeastern U.S.A. This occurrence extends both the geographic and stratigraphie range of the ichnotaxon and confirms its status as a useful and valid ichnotaxon.
