Abstract

A one-dimensional ladder-like five-coordinated zinc coordination polymer, [Zn(ceppa)(phen)·5H2O]n (ceppa = 2-carboxyethyl(phenyl)phosphinate; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) was hydrothermally synthesized in a mixed solvent system, where ethanol was used as the co-solvent.The as-synthesized product was characterized by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique, elemental analysis, ICP-AES, NMR, FTIR, UV-Vis spectrum, and thermo-gravimetric analysis. The one-dimensional ladder-like structure is constructed of 8-membered ring [Zn(PO2)]2 and 14-membered ring [(PO)CH2CH2COZn]2. Moreover, it is noticeable that π–π stacking interactions exist between 1,10-phenanthroline molecules of the adjacent one-dimensional chains in the same layer, and between benzene rings and 1,10-phenanthroline molecules. Additionally, the complex exhibits the photoluminescence with an emission maximum at 383 nm at room temperature.
