SYNTHESIS OF LONG CHAIN ALKYL AMMONIUM HEXATHIODIPHOSPHATE (IV): CHARACTERIZATION OF THE DIHYDROGENO-HEXATHIODIPHOSPHATE ANION H₂P₂S²₆

Abstract

This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of the following two compounds: (C₁₈H₃₇N⁺H₃)₄, P₂S⁴ ₆ and (C₂₂H₄₅N⁺ (CH₃)₃)₂, H₂P₂S^2- ₆. The first compound is a “new classical salt” containing the hexathiodiphosphate (IV) anion whereas the second compound is absolutely new because it contains the H₂P₂S^2- ₆ anion. The existence of this anion was supposed but it has not been isolated and characterized so far. In the present case, the characterization of H₂P₂S^2- ₆ was ascertained by ³¹P NMR studies. The stabilization of this moiety is explained in terms of steric effects.
