A Super Surface Finish Module by Simultaneous Influences from Electromagnetic Force and Ultrasonic Vibrations

Abstract

We introduce a new method for super surface finishing by applying electromagnetic force and ultrasonic energy simultaneously into the electrolyte, helping to remove dregs from the gap between electrodes during the electrofinishing process of surfaces made of ACD 37 material. We discuss the factors governing the effects of the simultaneous electromagnetic ultrasonic electrofinishing (SEMUEF). Generating a high magnetic field intensity or using a higher current density produces a larger electromagnetic force and discharge ability, resulting in a better finish. Also, high rotational speeds of the electromagnetic-assistance mechanism, the anode, and the cathode also produce a better finish. The average effect of the electromagnetic assistance was slightly greater than that of the ultrasound. The simultaneous effect of the electromagnetic force and the ultrasonic vibrations during the electrofinishing process have a marked effect, making the workpiece surfaces smooth and bright.
