Effect of ionic liquid as lubricants in turning H 13 tool steel- an experimental study

ABSTRACT

Minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) is widely preferred over flood lubrication due to its environmental-friendly nature. The objective of the lubricant is to enhance the surface finish, eliminate the chips from the cutting areas, improves the tool life, reduces friction at the tool-work and tool-chip interfaces and also reduces the temperature in machining. However, the choice of proper cutting fluid in MQL is considered as the primary issue to be resolved while considering various factors like environmental pollution and industrial health risk. In this study, the machining performances such as surface quality and tool wear were examined. The experimental parameters include three machining conditions such as (a) dry, (b) oil MQL and (c) ionic liquid (IL) MQL under three different feed rate and cutting speed. The results confirm that IL MQL relatively reduces wear on the tool and surface roughness than under dry and oil MQL conditions.
