EMJ Focus Areas:
Welcome to another expanded issue of EMJ! We have eleven articles in this issue covering a broad range of topics, from the career intentions of mechanical engineering students to more traditional topics such as organization performance, resource planning, project management, and many more. This issue is also the first of a new era in EMJ.
Dr. Edward Pohl has completed his service as editor for EMJ. Working with Ed over the past few years as co-editor of EMJ has been a pleasure. I first met Ed at the Reliability and Maintainability Symposium in 1997, and have been his student, mentee, and colleague since 2006. I will miss our weekly talks as we worked on the editorial business for the journal, but as this chapter closes, a new one opens.
EMJ has seen healthy growth in submissions, accepted manuscripts, “clicks”, and citations resulting in an impact factor of 2.070 and five-year impact factor is 2.173. Kudos to our contributing authors for submitting such high-quality manuscripts. With this growth, we have decided to expand our editor team from two to three with the goal of continuing to improve our metrics, but also improving our review turnaround time. Joining me as EMJ editors are Dr. Jennifer Cross and Dr. Simon Philbin. Jennifer and Simon have contributed much to ASEM and EMJ over the years, and I am thrilled that they have decided to continue their service as editors. I’ll allow Jennifer and Simon to introduce themselves in their own words.
Greetings everyone! It is my great pleasure to join Dr. Smith and Dr. Philbin as one of the Co-Editors-in-Chief of the Engineering Management Journal (EMJ). Since 2016, I have had the privilege of serving in the Managing Editor role for EMJ, processing incoming manuscripts, and prior to that, I served as an Associate Editor (2012–2016) and reviewer. EMJ is the leading journal in the field of engineering management, and has a long history of excellence. I look forward to working with Drs. Smith and Philbin, Taylor & Francis staff, our Associate Editor team, authors, and reviewers to maintain EMJ’s tradition of excellence, while continuing to grow the journal’s reputation, reach, and impact.
I am currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial, Manufacturing & Systems Engineering (IMSE) at Texas Tech University (TTU). I received my BS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Arkansas and my MS and PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech, where I also served as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Enterprise Engineering Research Lab (EERL). I am a member of American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM), Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers (IISE), and American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).
My research interests are primarily in the domains of organizational assessment/performance measurement, teams, and performance improvement methodologies, and my coauthors and I are honored to have published multiple papers in EMJ related to these topics over the years. I am excited to have the opportunity to work to continue to promote EMJ’s leadership in these areas, as well as in the other domains in the field of engineering management.
I am delighted to have been appointed as one of the new Co-Editors of the Engineering Management Journal (EMJ). I have been on the Editorial Board of EMJ since 2015 serving as an Associate Editor for Program and Project Management and before this I was a reviewer for the journal. I see this new appointment as a great opportunity to work alongside Dr. Smith and Dr. Cross through providing overall leadership for the journal to ensure its continued success.
I am currently the Interim Head of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Director of the Nathu Puri Institute for Engineering and Enterprise and Professor of Engineering Management in the School of Engineering at London South Bank University (LSBU) in the UK. I joined LSBU in 2018 and previously worked at Imperial College London for 15 years. Prior to joining Imperial in 2003, I was at the Ministry of Defense for 9 years and originally worked in the field of energetic materials. I hold a BSc and PhD both in chemistry as well as an MBA. I previously served as a Board Member of the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) from 2014 to 2021 and I was the 2019/20 President of ASEM.
Although I originally trained as an organic chemist, several years later I changed my disciplinary focus from the physical sciences to engineering management. More recently I have become heavily involved in research on sustainable engineering and understanding the characteristics of emerging technologies. I see EMJ as a leading international publication to disseminate both academic and practitioner focused articles across the field of engineering management.
I hope you all enjoy this expanded issue, and I want to express special thanks to Taylor & Francis for their efforts to help us get your manuscripts in print as quickly as possible by allowing us these expanded issues to reduce our backlog. I hope you all have a great summer season.
