Abstract
Although the systems perspective has become a part of social work's theoretical knowledge base, educators need to have practice models that demonstrate the uses of the systems approach for specific populations and problems. A model is presented that addresses the use of the systems perspective in social work with abused, neglected, and at-risk children in disadvantaged neighborhoods. This Neighborhood Center Model incorporates practice at the systems levels of (a) the individual, (b) the family, and (c) the neighborhood. Explication of the theoretical framework enables new perspectives on several practice dilemmas and issues. An illustrative case example is presented, and methods for teaching the model are discussed.
