Abstract
This study presents the results of a 1990 survey of all deans of graduate schools of social work in the U.S. during the academic years 1988-90. A 63-item questionnaire was mailed to deans of 102 accredited schools of social work. The 53 responses provided information about the deans' demographic characteristics, professional tasks, reasons for entering administration, professional preparation, reading activities, perceptions of the deanship, developments in higher education, and issues and problems confronting the profession and social work education. This research is preliminary to a larger study of the deanship in schools of social work.
