Using a Contemporary Issue to Teach Community Organization

Pages 79-88 | Accepted 01 Jul 1999, Published online: 24 Feb 2014

Abstract

This article examines the recent epidemic of church burning, the important role of churches in African-American communities, and ways that social work educators can use church burning to teach empowerment-based community organization principles and skills. Two models of community practice described by Weil and Gamble are discussed, as are implications of the topic of church burning for social work education.
