Copying Capabilities And Intertemporal Competition Between Joint Input Technologies: Cd Vs Dat

Pages 233-241 | Received 25 Sep 1989, Published online: 28 Jul 2006

Abstract

In this paper an intertemporal model of consumer demand for joint input technologies is sketched out. The model is then used to investigate the expected impact on demands for hardware and software of Digital Audio Tape Technology (DAT) having the capability to copy from Compact Discs (CD). It is shown that this capability will lead to a reduced demand for CD hardware and software in the early period, but an increased demand for DAT hardware in the later period, relative to the no copying scenario.
