Abstract
Some 31 students came to sunny (exceptionally so) Oxford for nine days (August 28-September 6, 2001) to absorb the fundamentals of neutron scattering. As in previous times the background theory lectures were given by Andrew Boothroyd (U. Oxford). Many others, particularly from ISIS, helped by giving lectures and devoting their time. The organizers were Terry Willis (the only director the school has known, formerly at Harwell and Oxford, now retired), Chick Wilson and Roger Eccleston from ISIS. Colin Carlile (formerly at ISIS now at ILL), who has been so much involved in schools in the past, played his part with two lectures and tutorials. Other lecturers coming from outside the UK were Alberto Albinati (Milan Univ.) and Gerry Lander (TU, Karlsruhe). An important part of these schools are the afternoon tutorials, and they were shared amongst the above, together with help from Sean Langridge (ISIS). Here the students find out whether they have really understood the principles, and questions are strongly encouraged. There is also a small time set aside for students to make presentations of their own work.
