Abstract
Counselors can best help teachers understand the role and function of career education in the elementary classroom when they have a specific strategy that can be used as a demonstration model. Free time in the classroom can be reconceptualized as a medium for extending learning beyond formal instruction and be utilized for career development activities. This paper presents a model based on the Premack Principle which utilizes preferred learning activities to promote the career development of students during free time in the classroom. The model and two examples of preferential career activities are described for counselor and teacher use.
