Abstract
The phenomenon of suicide is increasing despite the fact that it is viewed as a taboo in Western civilization. This paper presents an overview of various cultural, historical, sociological, and psychological aspects of suicide, and indicates that there is not yet a comprehensive definition of this phenomenon. After this brief perusal, the theoretical approach of specific examples of current research is reviewed. Based upon this survey of background and present research, it is suggested that further emphasis be placed upon gathering detailed case studies of suicides. Also, it is argued that contributions from a variety of fields be used in order to obtain a more clear-cut picture of the actual causative factors in suicides and attempted suicides.
