Abstract

The objective of the work described here was to design and develop a computer model to study the distribution/transport of diesel particulate matter in mine airways and to apply the model to study methods of reducing the concentrations of diesel particulate matter. The basic logic of the simulation model for handling air and diesel movements and the means for modeling air splits and junctions are discussed. The model application to a three-entry coal mine development section is summarized. The variables of the study include the ventilation schemes using vent tubing and brattice, the direction of air flow at the section dumpsite, and the exhaust locations on the vehicles. The control procedures simulated on the three-entry coal mine development section indicated significant reductions in concentrations of diesel particulate matter with ventilation and exhaust location changes only.
