1 We also wonder if Dahl has misidentified functionalist approaches as attempts to define morality; to our eye they are attempts to explain morality. Indeed, it seems entirely possible to draw on Dahl’s definition when identifying and describing moral phenomena, but then consult the functionalist approaches he reviews when theorising about their underlying bases (see Wood et al., Citation2015).
