Abstract
In this introduction to a series of papers on psychoanalysis and scientific research that will be published across three issues of this journal, the author sets the stage by highlighting the urgency of the questions being debated. What we mean by science and research, validation, quantitative and group statistical measurement are shown to reflect historical, cultural, social, political, and economic factors. Ultimately this debate is not only about science and hermeneutics, positivism and constructivism, but about the future of psychoanalysis as well as our humanistic and moral values.
