Abstract

Phytochemical examination of Berlinia confusa led to the isolation of a monoacylglyceride named 1-O-tetracosaenoyl-sn-1-glycerol (Citation1) as well as two other compounds: sitosteryl-β-D-glucoside (Citation2) and betulinic acid (Citation3) from the dried stem bark of B. confusa. The structure of the new compound was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic studies and comparison with known related compounds. The extracts and the isolated compounds displayed inhibitory activities against selected gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms with diameter zone of inhibition values of 15.1 ± 0.3 to 6.0 ± 0.4 mm.

Acknowledgments

Our thanks are due to Mr. Thomas Kolawole Odewo of the Forest Research Institute of Nigeria for the collection and authentication of the plant material. We thank Prof. Benn of the Department of Chemistry, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada for running the NMR and MS spectra in his laboratory.
