The prevalence and characteristics of relational depth events in psychotherapy

Abstract

We introduce two complementary measures of relational depth, defined as a state of profound contact and engagement between client and therapist. Using an internet-based survey of client and therapist accounts (n=342), judges rated relational depth as present in over a third of significant therapy event descriptions. Participants also completed the Relational Depth Inventory (RDI), for which we report reliability, validity and factor structure. Relational depth events were more likely to occur in the presence of strong therapeutic alliance, and with female participants, but client or therapist role and therapy duration were not related to relational depth content or RDI. RDI items for connectedness, love, respect and intimacy were most strongly associated with relational depth content.

Nous introduisons deux mesures complémentaires de la profondeur relationnelle, définie comme un état de profond contact et d'engagement entre le client et le thérapeute. Sur la base d'une enquête par internet de clients et de thérapeutes (n = 342), des juges ont évalué la profondeur relationnelle comme présente dans environ le tiers des descriptions d’événements significatifs en thérapie. Les participants ont rempli également un inventaire de profondeur relationnel (RDI) pour lequel nous reportons la fidélité, la validité ainsi que la structure factorielle. Les événements relationnels de profondeur tendaient à apparaître plus souvent en présence d'une alliance thérapeutique forte, et avec des participantes femmes, alors que le rôle du client ou du thérapeute et la durée de la thérapie n’étaient pas reliés au contenu de la profondeur relationnelle ou au RDI. Les items du RDI pour la connexion, l'amour, le respect et l'intimité étaient les plus fortement associés avec le contenu de la profondeur relationnelle.

Abstract

Vorgestellt werden zwei komplementäre Maße der relationaler Tiefe (relational depth), definiert als Zustand von tiefgreifendem Kontakt und Bindung zwischen Klient und Therapeut. Bei der Auswertung von online erhobenen Klienten- und Therapeutenberichten(n =342) fanden Beurteiler Momente relationaler Tiefe in über einem Drittel der beschriebenen bedeutsamen Therapieereignisse. Klienten und Therapeuten füllten ebenfalls das Relational Depth Inventory (RDI) aus, für welches Reliabilität, Validität und Faktorstruktur berichtet werden. Momente von relationaler Tiefe traten häufiger bei starker therapeutischer Allianz und bei weiblichen Klienten bzw. Therapeuten auf, während Klient- und Therapeutenrolle sowie Dauer der Therapie in keiner Verbindung zum Inhalt der relationalen Tiefe oder dem RDI standen. Die RDI Items für Verbundenheit, Liebe, Respekt und Vertrautheit waren am stärksten mit dem der relationalen Tiefe assoziiert.

Abbiamo introdotto due misure complementari di profondità relazionale, definibile come uno stato di contatto e profondo coinvolgimento tra cliente e terapeuta. Attraverso i resoconti di clienti e terapeuti (N = 342) tramite un'indagine su una piattaforma internet, i giudici hanno valutato come la profondità relazionale sia presente in più di un terzo delle descrizioni degli eventi significativi delle terapie. Ai partecipanti veniva chiesto inoltre di compilare il Relational Depth Inventory (RDI), del quale si riportano i valori di affidabilità, validità e struttura fattoriale. Gli eventi relazionali profondi si presentavano maggiormente in presenza di forti livelli di alleanza terapeutica, e nei partecipanti donne, ma il ruolo di cliente o terapeuta e la durata della terapia sembravano invece non legati al contenuto dell'episodio di profondità relazionale o all'RDI. Gli item del questionario RDI relativi alla connessione, l'affetto, il rispetto e l'intimità erano più fortemente associati ai contenuti di profondità relazionale.

Se introducen dos medidas complementarias de la profundidad relacional, definida como un contacto profundo e involucramiento emocional entre cliente y terapeuta. Utilizando un relevamiento en internet de relatos de clientes y terapeutas (n = 342), los jueces evaluaron la profundidad de la relación como un elemeto presente en más de un tercio de los relatos de momentos significaivos en los procesos terapeuticos. Los participantes tambien completaron el Inventario de Eventos de Profundidad Relacional, del cual reportamos la validez, confiabilidad y estructura factorial. Resultó mas probable que estos eventos ocurrieran en presencia de una fuerte alianza terapeutica y con participantes del sexo femenino. Los roles de terapeuta y cliente, así como la duración del tratamiento no se asociaron al contenido de profundidad relacional (RDI). Los componentes del RDI vinculados al amor,el contacto emocional , el respeto y el sentido de intimidad fueron los más fuertemente asociados al RDI.
