Neuroimaging for psychotherapy research: Current trends

Abstract

Objective: This article reviews neuroimaging studies that inform psychotherapy research. An introduction to neuroimaging methods is provided as background for the increasingly sophisticated breadth of methods and findings appearing in psychotherapy research. Method: We compiled and assessed a comprehensive list of neuroimaging studies of psychotherapy outcome, along with selected examples of other types of studies that also are relevant to psychotherapy research. We emphasized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) since it is the dominant neuroimaging modality in psychological research. Results: We summarize findings from neuroimaging studies of psychotherapy outcome, including treatment for depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and schizophrenia. Conclusions: The increasing use of neuroimaging methods in the study of psychotherapy continues to refine our understanding of both outcome and process. We suggest possible directions for future neuroimaging studies in psychotherapy research.

Obiettivo: Questo articolo esamina gli studi di neuroimaging che improntano la ricerca in psicoterapia. Inizialmente vengono illustrati i metodi di neuroimaging come background teorico di un ambito sempre più vasto e sofisticato dei metodi utilizzati e dei risultati ottenuti nella ricerca in psicoterapia. Metodo: Abbiamo compilato e valutato un elenco esaustivo di studi di neuroimaging sull'esito delle psicoterapie, insieme ad esempi selezionati di altri tipi di studi altrettanto rilevanti per la ricerca in psicoterapia. Abbiamo enfatizzato la risonanza magnetica (MRI), in quanto è la modalità di neuroimaging dominante nella ricerca psicologica. Risultati: Abbiamo riassunto i risultati di studi di neuroimaging sull'esito in psicoterapia, che comprendono il trattamento per la depressione, il disturbo ossessivo compulsivo (OCD), e la schizofrenia. Conclusioni: Il crescente utilizzo di metodi di neuroimaging nello studio della psicoterapia continua ad affinare le nostre conoscenze sia sull'esito che sul processo. Vengono proposti suggerimenti circa possibili direzioni su futuri studi di neuroimaging nella ricerca in psicoterapia.

Ziel: Dieser Artikel prüft Studien zu bildgebenden Verfahren des zentralen Nervensystems, welche die Psychotherapieforschung geprägt haben. Eine Einführung in bildgebende Verfahren dient als Hintergrundwissen für die zunehmend anspruchsvolle Breite an Methoden und erscheinenden Befunden in der Psychotherapieforschung. Methoden: Wir haben eine umfassende Liste von Studien zu bildgebenden Verfahren von Psychotherapie Outcomes zusammengestellt und bewertet, zusammen mit ausgewählten Beispielen von verschiedenen Typen von Studien, die alle relevant für die Psychotherapieforschung sind. Wir haben die Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT) hervorgehoben da sie das dominante bildgebende Verfahren in der Psychotherapieforschung darstellt. Ergebnisse: Wir haben Befunde zusammengefasst aus Studien zu bildgebenden Verfahren über Psychotherapie Outcomes, welche Behandlungen für Depression, Zwangsstörung und Schizophrenie beinhalten. Schlussfolgerung: Die zunehmende Nutzung von bildgebenden Verfahren in Psychotherapiestudien veranlasst dazu unser Verständnis von Ergebnis und Prozess weiterzuentwickeln. Wir schlagen mögliche Richtungen für zukünftige Studien mit bildgebenden Verfahren in der Psychotherapieforschung vor.

Objetivo: Este artigo revê os estudos de neuroimagem que informam a investigação em psicoterapia. É fornecida uma introdução aos métodos de neuroimagem como conhecimento de base para o conjunto cada vez mais sofisticada de métodos e descobertas que surgem na pesquisa em psicoterapia. Método: Compilamos e avaliamos uma lista completa de estudos de neuroimagem de resultados em psicoterapia, juntamente com exemplos selecionados de outros tipos de estudos, que são também relevantes para a pesquisa em psicoterapia. Enfatizamos as técnicas de imagem de ressonância magnética (MRI) por se tratarem das modalidades de neuroimagem dominantes em investigação psicológica. Resultados: Sumarizamos as descobertas dos estudos de neuroimagem de resultados em psicoterapia, incluindo tratamento para a depressão, perturbação obsessivo-compulsiva (POC) e esquizofrenia. Conclusões: O crescente uso de métodos de neuroimagem no estudo da psicoterapia continua a refinar o nosso entendimento quer do resultado quer do processo. Sugerimos possíveis direções para futuros estudos de neuroimagem na pesquisa em psicoterapia.

目的：本文回顧神經影像學對心理治療研究的啟發，神經影像學在心理治療研究中的方法與成果日趨精密寬廣，我們對神經影像學方法進行介紹，以做為背景知識。方法：我們蒐集並評估許多有關神經影像學的心理治療效果研究，也由其他類型研究中擷取與心理治療研究相關者。由於核磁共振影像(MRI)在心理學研究中是主要的神經造影方式，我們特別對它介紹。結果：我們對心理治療療效之神經影像學研究加以歸納，包括針對憂鬱、強迫症(OCD)、以及思覺失調症之治療。結論：在心理治療研究中對於神經影像學方法的運用越來越多，可幫助我們對心理治療之效果與歷程有更為精細的了解。作者對未來在心理治療研究中運用神經影像學的方向提出建議。
