A trans-theoretical training designed to promote understanding and management of countertransference for trainee therapists

Abstract

Objective: There is evidence that awareness of countertransference (CT) in combination with a conceptualization of CT facilitates its management. This study examines the impact of a trans-theoretical training designed to make the construct of CT accessible to trainee therapists in programs oriented towards cognitive-behavioral therapy. The training aimed to enhance trainees’ awareness, understanding, and management of CT. Method: Academics at five New Zealand universities introduced the training into their curriculum. Five academics and 54 clinical psychology trainees evaluated it, responding to open-ended questions on the impact of the training on awareness, understanding, and management of CT. They also rated the training’s effectiveness. Results: The majority of trainees reported increased awareness and conceptualization of CT. They rated the training as useful for professional practice and reported increased commitment to monitoring CT. Academics also observed trainees’ increased awareness and understanding of CT and openness to discussing it. Trainees and academics were less confident in trainees’ abilities to manage CT in clinical practice, although trainees reported gains in this area. Conclusions: The training appeared to enhance awareness and conceptualization of CT, processes that support its management. However, future research into training models needs to examine the impact on CT management in clinical practice.

Objetivo: Há evidências de que a consciência da contratransferência (CT) em combinação com uma conceituação de CT facilita o seu manejo. Este estudo examina o impacto de um treinamento transteórico projetado para fazer o constructo CT acessível a terapeutas em treinamento em programas voltados para a terapia cognitivo-comportamental. O treinamento teve como objetivo melhorar a tomada de consciência, o entendimento e o manejo dos treinandos. Método: Professores em cinco universidades da Nova Zelândia introduziram o treinamento em seu currículo. Cinco professores e 54 estagiários de psicologia clínica o avaliaram respondendo a perguntas abertas sobre o impacto do treinamento na tomada de consciência, compreensão e manejo da CT. Eles também avaliaram a efetividade do treinamento. Resultados: A maioria dos formandos relatou maior conscientização e conceituação de CT. Eles avaliaram o treinamento como útil para a prática profissional e relataram um maior monitoramento da CT. Os professores observaram o aumento da consciência e compreensão dos participantes sobre CT e a abertura para discuti-la. Ziel: Es gibt Hinweise darauf, dass das Bewusstsein für Gegenübertragung (CT) in Kombination mit einer Konzeptualisierung von CT seine Handhabung erleichtert. Diese Studie untersucht die Auswirkungen eines trans-theoretischen Trainings, das entworfen wurde, um das Konstrukt von CT für angehende Therapeuten in Programmen, die auf kognitive Verhaltenstherapie ausgerichtet sind, zugänglich zu machen. Das Training zielte auf die Verbesserung der Wahrnehmung, des Verständnisses und der Handhabung von CT durch die Auszubildenden ab. Methode: Wissenschaftliche Fächer in fünf neuseeländischen Universitäten führten die Ausbildung in ihren Lehrplan ein. Fünf Fächer und 54 Auszubildende der klinischen Psychologie bewerteten es, wobei sie auf offene Fragen zu den Auswirkungen des Trainings auf Bewusstsein, Verständnis und Handhabung von CT antworteten. Obiettivo: Diverse evidenze mostrano come la consapevolezza del controtransfert (CT) in combinazione con una concettualizzazione del CT facilita la sua gestione. Questo studio valuta l'impatto di un training trans-teorico costruito per rendere il costrutto del CT accessibile ai terapeuti in formazione in programmi orientati verso la terapia cognitivo-comportamentale. Il training era volto a migliorare la consapevolezza, la comprensione e la gestione del CT da parte dei partecipanti. Metodo: gli accademici di cinque università neozelandesi hanno introdotto il training nel loro curriculum. Cinque docenti universitari e 54 tirocinanti in psicologia clinica lo hanno valutato, rispondendo a domande aperte sull'impatto del training sulla consapevolezza, comprensione e gestione del CT. Hanno anche valutato l'efficacia del training. Risultati: la maggior parte dei tirocinanti ha mostrato una maggiore consapevolezza e concettualizzazione del CT. Hanno valutato il training utile per la pratica professionale e hanno mostrato un maggiore impegno nel monitorare il CT. Gli accademici hanno anche osservato una maggiore consapevolezza e comprensione del CT da parte dei tirocinanti e la disponibilità a discuterne.
