Abstract
This article contends that the rhetorical theory of commonplaces, stasis, or stock issues is misleading and useless, and argues that rhetoric will be on sounder grounds by giving up the attempt to formulate a pre‐existing structure into which the issues of deliberative propositions can be sorted.
