The effects of speech summaries upon audience comprehension of expository speeches of varying quality and complexity

Pages 119-127 | Published online: 22 May 2009

Abstract

Analysis of data obtained on a 25‐item, multiple‐choice post‐test indicated that well organized speeches produced significantly more comprehension than did poorly organized speeches; that linguistically simple speeches were significantly more easily comprehended than linguistically complex speeches; and that inclusion of a preview or a review produced significantly more comprehension than did inclusion of no summaries whatsoever.
