An experimental study of the effect of verbal agreement on leadership maintenance in problem‐solving discussion

Pages 270-276 | Published online: 22 May 2009

Abstract

An hypothesized relationship between a leader's verbal agreement with group members and the effectiveness and maintenance of that individual's leadership was subjected to an experimental test. Support is provided for the concept of a process of mutual reinforcement in which a leader's agreement is perceived by members as objectivity, eliciting from them statements supportive of the leader and greater satisfaction with the final group product.
