Distance education: How to begin

Abstract

The variety of programs offered in criminal justice, ranging from training for law enforcement to preparation of prelaw students, suggests that these programs would be amenable to distance delivered instruction. Although instruction of this type has its drawbacks, especially the expense, distance education can expand the scope of criminal justice programs not only in enrollment, but also in the range of courses offered. This paper examines some of the planning issues. These include performing a needs assessment for technological, personnel, and curricular needs; formulating a marketing plan and selecting marketing strategies; developing instruction; and preparing instructors to deliver instruction over a distance.
