The Role of an Actuarial Director in the Development of an Introductory Program

 

Abstract

We describe the roles and duties of a director in developing an introductory actuarial program. Degree plan design, specialized exam courses, internship classes, coordination of efforts with Economics and Finance Departments, opportunities for creating a minor in actuarial mathematics, actuarial clubs, career advice, and interaction with actuarial societies are discussed.

Susan G. Staples

Trained in the area of complex and quasi-conformal analysis, Susan G. Staples received her doctorate from the University of Michigan. Since joining the faculty of Texas Christian University (TCU) in 1995, she has filled many roles including a 10-year term as Graduate Director of the TCU MAT program. She holds positions on two editorial boards – the American Mathematical Monthly and the Classroom Resources Material book series for the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

She has directed the Actuarial Program at TCU since its inception 2001; her area of expertise therein is interest theory. She genuinely enjoys working with actuarial students and helping them chart a path for success. She is pleased to have been selected by the MAA for the national Committee on the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics (CUPM) Actuarial Sciences group.
