Performing Major Surgery: A Systematic Process for Curriculum Innovation

Pages 14-17 | Published online: 08 Mar 2013

Abstract

After reviewing national, state and local standards for health educators, the Health Science faculty undertook a major curricular overhaul using a systematic planning model. Over 10 required courses were dissolved; job behaviors were analyzed; competencies were reorganized around the job behaviors; and new course objectives, content outlines, and classroom activities were redeveloped. This article discusses the successes and problems in performing major surgery on an undergraduate curriculum. Major issues addressed were consistency in management, strengthened advising, revision of the majors' handbook, improvement in professional development skills, insufficient content, sequence of skill progression, uniformity in skill teaching, and faculty workload.
