Abstract
Today' s middle school student lives in a media saturated culture. In fact, the mass media now function as a “parallel school system.” Those who work with young adolescents need to understand the impact of the mass media upon this age group. This article explores young adolescents' consumption of popular media and the impact of the media upon their adolescent health, e.g., nutrition, sexual information, and use of tobacco and alcohol products. In addition, some recommendations are provided for professionals working with this age group that can help them arm young adolescents with the skills to approach the media critically in order that they might make healthy choices.
