Toward an empirical definition of self‐disclosure: Validation in a single case design

Pages 269-276 | Published online: 06 Jun 2009

This paper examines the utility of a general self‐disclosure prediction equation, which is based on normative data, in predicting the perceived disclosure ratings of three independent observers. Results indicate that the general multidimensional prediction equation compares favorably with the best idiosyncratic combination of variables for the observers. Findings suggest that while individuals may show some variation in the degree to which they attend to the basic dimensions of self‐disclosing behavior, there is a specific linear combination of basic parameters that is associated with the perception of self‐relevant communication.
