A framework is presented for analyzing the role of episodic communication in relationship construction. The framework consists of two key concepts: metaphor and theme. A detailed case study is presented to support and illustrate the framework. Conceptual linkages are made between main metaphors (such as “relationship is captivation,” “relationship is worship”) and themes (such as “commitment,” “manipulation,” “respect”). The external systematicity between these metaphors and themes also is discussed.
