Collection Development and Managment in the University Libraries of Pakistan: A Survey of Users’ Satisfaction

Abstract

This study is an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of collection development and management policies and procedures in the university libraries of North West Frontier Province of Pakistan currently Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), on the basis of users’ satisfaction. A survey method was employed to conduct the research. The study covered all those well-established public and private sector universities of the province which were chartered by the Government of KPK, and recognized by HEC till December 31st, 2012 (Public= 17 and Private = 9, Total 26 universities). The population of the study were the teaching faculty of both public and private sector universities who were purposively selected at the rate of 10 teachers per university, having a minimum of three years library usage experience, knowledge of ICT applications and participation in library activities. A semi structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the target population. Out of 260 people in the sample, 200(77%) filled in questionnaires were received. The study concluded that collection development and management policies and procedures in the university libraries of KPK are ineffective in fulfilling users’ information needs effectively.
