Quality and Value of the Data Resource in Large Enterprises

 

Abstract

Enterprises are facing problems in managing the quality and value of their key data objects (often referred to as master data). This article presents the findings from a case study comprising six large enterprises. The study results point to the importance of the situational nature of master data as a strategic resource, which must be considered when analyzing how the quality of data affects its value for business.

Boris Otto

Boris Otto is professor of supply chain and information management at TU Dortmund University in Germany. He holds the chair of Supply Net Order Management endowed by Audi and leads the information management research and development activities at Fraunhofer IML in Dortmund. His research focuses on automobile logistics, enterprise data management, and product and service networks. Boris previously held positions with University of St. Gallen, Switzerland; Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, USA; University of Stuttgart, Germany; PricewaterhouseCoopers and SAP. He holds a post-doctoral qualification (habilitation) from the University of St. Gallen and a Dr.-Ing. degree from University of Stuttgart.
