Abstract

A planar inverted-F chip antenna based on a Barium Strontium Titanate—cycloolefin copolymer (BST-COC) polymer composite for 2.4 GHz wrist applications was designed and characterized. A relative permittivity of 13.8 and dielectric loss of 0.0015 at 2.55 GHz were characterized for the composite material using ring resonator structures at 2.55 GHz. The fabricated antenna has a very compact size of 9 mm × 6 mm × 5 mm, well suited for wrist-type applications. The antenna covers the 2.4 WLAN (2.4–2.484 GHz) frequency band with more than 60% radiation efficiency. The proximity effect of the user's hand on the performance of the antenna was also investigated.
