Abstract
By generalizing the classical Maier-Saupe mean-field potential to distorted configurations, a general field equation of nematostatics is deduced, which can also be used within defect “cores”. A detailed comparison with the deGennes phenomenological theory is presented, and the advantages of using a molecular-based approach are discussed.
