Linearly polarized light irradiation of films of polymethacrylates with azobenzene side chains induces dichroism and is applicable to the alignment photocontrol of thermotropic and lyotropic nematic liquid crystals and to the preparation of optical polarizers consisting of anisotropic dye films.
