A single relaxation process has been observed in both SmC* and hexatic SmI* phases by dielectric and electroptic methods, which was attributed to fluctuations of the bond orientation order (BOO). This mode exhibits a softening when approaching the SmI* phase on cooling. The coupling between the BOO and polarization results in an anomalous increase of PS value at the transition to the hexatic phase.
