Abstract
3,3'‐Dichlorobenzidine is included on the List of Priority Substances to be assessed under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. Based on the sufficient weight of evidence of carcinogenicity in several species of experimental animals, and supporting data on genotoxicity, 3,3'‐dichlorobenzidine has been classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans”. Based on a comparison of the average daily intake of 3,3'‐dichlorobenzidine by the general population in Canada estimated on the basis of fugacity modelling of environmental concentrations, with the potential of this substance to induce tumours, the priority for analysis of options to reduce exposure in the general environment is considered to be very low, compared to that of other substances assessed under the Priority Substances Program.
