Inorganic fluoride: Evaluation of risks to health from environmental exposure in Canada

Pages 327-344 | Published online: 19 Nov 2008

Abstract

Inorganic fluoride is included on the List of Priority Substances to be assessed under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. Available epidemiological data on the carcinogenicity of fluoride in human populations exposed in drinking water or in the occupational environment or in animal species exposed by ingestion are inconclusive. The estimated average daily intakes of inorganic fluoride for various age groups of the general population of Canada, are at least 20% less than the level (≥: 200 μg/kg bw/day fluoride) at which adverse effects upon the skeleton, the end‐point considered critical on the basis of available data, are anticipated to occur in humans.
