Thinking Creatively About Revenue Opportunities

Betsy Bowers Betsy Bowers worked for many years as a Qm2 consultant, advising the Smithsonian and the National Building Museum, among many others. Currently, she is Director of Education and Visitor Experience for the National Law Enforcement Museum, opening in Washington, DC, in 2013. She is a graduate and past adjunct faculty member of The George Washington University Museum Education Program.

Rebecca Fulcher Rebecca Fulcher is an emerging professional who currently works at the National Law Enforcement Museum in Washington, DC. She holds a master's degree from The George Washington University's Museum Education Program and has expertise in the areas of visitor experience, public relations, and online learning.

Abstract

Revenue generation is a challenge faced by museums in today's economy. The authors encourage educators to take on a larger role in establishing new revenue streams. By applying Jim Collins' “Hedgehog Concept,” their unique knowledge of audiences, and their strong ability to work in teams, educators can rethink what they've always done to influence the long-term financial viability of their organizations.
