Notes

Dr. Chen Xiangming believes that so-called “qualitative research” is different from the “dingxing yanjiu” often mentioned now in China, in that it is an activity that uses the researcher him/herself as a research tool, performs a comprehensive exploration of sociological phenomena using various methods of data collection in a natural environment, uses induction to analyze the data and form theories, and obtains interpretive understandings formed through interactions with the targets of the makeup of their behaviors and significance. For more details see Chen (Citation2004).

Purposeful sampling is using the people, places, and events that can provide the greatest amount of information for the problem being studied (Patton Citation1990).
