Abstract
Social welfare problems in the town of Nerekhta in Kostroma region are outlined using survey data. Issues of housing, wages, youth employment, and leisure, as well as health and interethnic relations are analyzed. The author suggests greater publicity for existing social support programs and differentiates male and female responses.

1. A form of state support for Russian families raising children. This support is being rendered from 1 January 2007 upon the birth or adoption of a second, third, or subsequent child, conditioned on having Russian citizenship. The maternal capital fund comprised 408,960.5 rubles in 2013.
