The review will discuss the occurrence and sources of asbestos fibers in drinking water supplies, methods of analysis, fiber characteristics and effects of water treatment practices on fiber concentration. Drinking water as a source of asbestos for man will be reviewed in the context of other sources of exposure. The biological effects of ingested asbestos will be discussed by reference to short and long term toxicity studies, and to epidemiological studies.
