Cathode Reactions and Applications in Microbial Fuel Cells: A Review

&
Pages 2504-2525 | Published online: 12 Nov 2012

Abstract

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) has drawn much attention over the past decades for its potential applications in energy recovery (bioelectricity) from biomass waste. Apart from bioelectricity generation, some other applications were developed recently in the MFC cathodes, including bioremediation and bioproduction. The authors reviewed the cathode reactions and applications in MFC systems, listed and evaluated the MFC performance in various applications, and finally made a critical assessment for the future trend of cathode reaction research for MFCs.
