Abstract

Composting is an emerging remediation technology for soils contaminated with hazardous chemicals; however, many aspects of the technology still need to be evaluated before receiving full support from regulatory agencies and scientific communities. In this article, we review remediation composting technology for soils contaminated with explosive compounds. This review includes biotransformation of explosives during composting, relevant composting process principles and parameters involving kinetics, mass and heat transfer, and energy balance.
