Abstract
This introductory essay provides a comprehensive summary of co-cultural theorizing. In addition to explicating the foundations of the theory, we also summarize exemplars of existing research that applies the theory in different contexts and highlight contemporary scholarship that extends the theory beyond its initial conceptualization. We conclude the essay by providing a preview of the articles featured in this special issue.

Notes. These communicative practices are examples of tactics enacted to promote each orientation. It is important to recognize that, depending the other personal, interpersonal, or organizational factors, one tactic, (e.g., communicating self) can be used innovatively to promote more than one communication orientation.
