Prince: double-consciousness in expressing the value of work

Abstract

Prince was famous for engaging in dualities and multiplicities. His music spanned multiple genres and at different times in his nearly 4-decade career, Prince played with the boundaries of both gender and racial identity. Prince was also well known for his intense work, and the theme of work is consistently present in his music, his public statements and some of his most publicized actions. This article discusses how Prince expressed his ideas about the value of work in ways that were both race-specific and universal and that reflected the concept of double-consciousness—a framework for the analysis of race introduced by W.E.B. DuBois at the beginning of the 20th century.
